Day 7: Trash and Street Animals

Updated: Nov 23, 2024

Beginning another day in Medellin. I am a little upset for two reasons this morning for things going on at home while I am gone. (1) My petsitters aren't really being active with the kitty I left at home, Bruce. Not that they need to know, but I have them on camera around my house. So I see everything. And I see them on their phones and Bruce screaming at the top of his lungs asking for attention. I am cringing. So my friend J went to the house and took him outside for a little bit - that's not before she set off the alarm, so that's #2. Not at my friend, but at Verizon and ADT. Apparently, I needed to restart my phone (which I never do) when I landed in Colombia and since I did not, I wouldn't receive any calls from numbers I hadn't already called to in Colombia). So, suffice it to say, I'm in Salsa class, my friend sets off the alarm and I receive no calls or emails from ADT that the cops are about to arrive to my house with sirens and guns ablazing.

OK- so a little dramatic? Yeah, I know. But that's how it felt. Luckily, she called me and I had to go through hoops just to call ADT to shut it off since the APP wasn't working and my phone still didn't want to make outgoing calls to 800 numbers.

Anyways, I am so grateful for my friend J. I wish I was as great of a friend that mine are to me!

Decided to eat at a new breakfast spot each day, so here I am a little closer to my apt than the school - will definitely be late today. Medellianos are really slow with bringing checks etc. You have to ask for it, they don't just bring it. In the US, it does look like kind of rude like, "hey, you finished and here is the check, others are waiting so pay and get out of here". I appreciate this culture for the way they handle it.

PS. Is it Medellianos o Antioquenos o other???

Medellin is clean, overall. Yes there are bottles left behind from the night before. And their

'trash dump' is on a random corner and people have worse aim than I do. Some gets picked up. Some doesn't. There are mice, you don't see them much up to 8pm. There are some rats apparently. But there are no strays. Which is nice - but they need a cat here or there for this other pest issue. Sterilized! But yes. I was so impressed with a cat-only vet with a clinic cat in there (Siamese), I want to bring Serenity there just to have some time outside.

Today is a full day of classes until 5 and tomorrow is group and private classes, then Santa Elena for the flower fields - right now they are having a Flower Festival so I'm excited to see that on Saturday. It's a big thing.
